In the core of the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is second the most important in Vietnam after Hanoi. It is not only a commercial center but also a scientific, technological, industrial and tourist center. The city is bathed by many rivers, arroyos and canals, the biggest river being the Saigon River. The Port of Saigon, established in 1862, is accessible to ships weighing up to 30,000 tons, a rare advantage for an inland river port.

Sights

Ho Chi Minh City is a beautiful city and a major tourist destination in Vietnam. There are many places to visit in this city like:
Reunification Palace or Independence Palace is one of the major attractions of Ho Chi Minh City. This building speaks of the history of this country as it was the Presidential Palace of South Vietnam. The monument is open everyday in the morning. There are also touring guides available for free of cost.

War Remnants Museum: the War Remnants Museum was known as the ‘Exhibition House of American War Crimes’ and was established after the fall of the Southern Vietnam. The remnants of the war between Vietnam and America like pictures, ammunitions and armaments are in display here. This museum is open from 7.30 in the morning to 5 in the evening.

Museum of Vietnamese History: this museum has a huge collection of antiques and will have remnants of the brilliant history of Vietnam. Just outside the museum is the Botanical Garden, where one can have a great lunch.
Ho Chi Ming Museum: this museum is absolutely dedicated to the Ho Chi Ming the father of modern Vietnam. A Ho Chi Minh Book shop is also there in the museum.

There are a number of religious sites in Ho Chi Minh City, which are to be visited like, Notre Dame Cathdreal, Quan Am Pagoda, Thien Hau Pagoda and Phung Son Tu Pagoda.

Getting Around

There are many ways to travel in Ho Chi Minh City and most comfortable and easy way to traveling in by rental cars and taxis. It is very easy to find taxis all over the city at any time of the day. The taxi rates are fixed by the government and there are many companies which give taxis for rent Vinasun, Hoang Long, Vinataxi and Petrolimex. Dirvers often do not know English and also before boarding the taxi do not forget to carry small change. Another very popular mode of transportation in Ho Chi Minh City is the motorbike taxi. It is illegal to travel in a motorbike without a helmet so make sure the driver provides you with one. These motorbike taxis are much cheaper than the regular taxis. Cyclos are also very common in this city. They cost about 2 USD for an hour. This relatively slow mode of transportation is popular with the tourists. There are also buses in this city and information about them can be accumulated from the locals. The heavy traffic of Ho Chi Minh City makes walking the best way to travel here.

Getting There

The biggest international airport of Vietnam is Tan Son Nhat. Flights from all the main cities of Asia come to this airport. There are taxis from the airport to the city centre. There are bus services from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Vietnam. There are also bus services to various other parts of Vietnam. The main train station of Ho Chi Minh City is at Cach Mang Thang Tam (CMT8) in the northwestern part of the city. It is in close proximity to hotels.

Shopping

In Ho Chi Minh City, the visitors will be able to find a wide array of arts and crafts. Silk textiles, painting and ceramic items are extremely popular in the region. But bargain well when you go shopping in this city. The major markets of Ho Chi Minh City are Ben Thanh Market, Night market, Cho Binh Tay and War surplus market. In these markets you will be able to find various kinds of food items, Chinese items, velvet, silk, electronic goods and hardware. There are various super markets and departmental stores in the city where you can find most of the western goods. The two shops from where the torusits can buy exquisite souvenirs are Phuong Mai Art Gallery and s shop called Oil –Painting – Bui Vien Street. The best things to buy in Ho Chi Minh are clothes, accessories, electronic goods, art items and things for home decoration.

Nightlife

The nightlife scene of Ho Chi Minh City has transformed dramatically since 1975 after the end of the Vietnam War. There are both small bars and clubs and posh ultramodern ones in the city. Some of the bars and clubs in the city are open till early morning. The most exuberant nightlife is concentrated in District 1 and District 3. The imported drinks are quite expensive here. Some of the famous bars and clubs in Ho Chi Minh City are Apocalypse Now, Q Bar, Majestic Hotel, International Tourist Club, Tropical Rainforest, Palace Nightclub and America Discotheque. Most of the nig hotels in the city has their own discos and bars, which are very popular with the tourists.
