Hanoi is located in the Red River Delta, in the center of North Vietnam. It is encompassed by Thai Nguyen Province to the north, Vinh Phuc and Ha Tay to the west and south, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and Hung Yen provinces to the east and south-east.Hanoi means "the hinterland between the rivers" (Ha: river, Noi: interior). Hanoi’s territory is washed by the Red River (the portion of the Red River embracing Hanoi is approximately 40km long) and its tributaries, but there are some other rivers flowing through the capital, including Duong, Cau, Ca Lo, Day, Nhue, Tich, To Lich and Kim Nguu.

Sights

Hanoi is one of the most popular tourist spots in Vietnam. There are many attractions in this city and most of them are in close proximity to each other. Some of the major attractions of Hanoi city are:

Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoluem: the mausoleum of Ho Chi Ming, a famous and popular political figure of Vietnam is located in this city. It is the most visited place in Hanoi and can be really crowded sometimes. The Mausoleum is open from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. in the summer months and during winter from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Ba Dinh Square is another popular tourist destination renowned for its historic implications. It is where Ho Chi Minh gave his speech declaring the Independence of the republic of Vietnam in 1945. There is a beautiful and enormous shire in the square, which signifies the triumph of Vietnamese over Japan.

Just opposite to the Ba Dinh Square is the gorgeous Governor’s Palace. It is not open for public. The one pillar pagoda is very near to this place. This pagoda has a unique architecture and was constructed by Emperor Ly Thai To.

Ho Chi Minh Museum is another very interesting place to visit in Hanoi. The architectural achievements of modern day Vietnam can be found here. Another very interesting place to visit in Hanoi is the Van Mieu or the Temple of Literature. The Quoc Tu Giam is another very popular attraction, which is just next to the Temple of Literature.

While in Hanoi, do not forget to visit the Hoan Kiem Lake, which is like the lung of the city.

Eating Out

Hanoi is a great city and exceptional place to eat. There are big restaurants, small eateries and also road side stalls where you can get great food. In the big restaurants, you can taste food from all around the world, which is prepared by best chefs of Vietnam. The ambiences of most of the good restaurants in Hanoi are also very pleasant.

Cha Ca Restaurant: this restaurant is located on the northern part of Hoan Kiem Lake and is one of the most popular restaurants of Hanoi. There are both local and international customers to this city.

Little Hanoi Restaurants: the Little Hanoi restaurants in Hanoi are special places to have authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Old Hanoi is also considered as the best restaurant in the Old Quarter. This restaurant serves good Vietnamese cuisine in a western ambience. This restaurant also offers cooking classes in the morning.

Finnegan’s Irish Pub – it is a pub cum restaurant where you will find English food like fish and chips and Irish stew. It is also a great late night spot.

Highway 4 serves some of the best traditional and unique food. You can taste some good quality Vietnamese liquor here.

Asahi Sushi and Al Fresco’s are two restaurants in Hanoi serving Japanese and Italian cuisine.

There are also quite a few pizza places and cafes in Hanoi for fine dining.

Getting Around

Hanoi is a big city, which is divided in to a number of districts. There are ample ways of traveling in Hanoi like buses, taxis, cars, bikes, cyclos, cycles and of course walking.

Bus- though there are regular local buses, it is not very comfortable for the tourists. It is difficult to travel in the bus if you do not know Vietnamese.

Taxi- taxis are very convenient and cheap way of traveling in Hanoi. There are three taxi companies in Hanoi, Taxi CP, Hanoi Taxi and 52 Taxi. On boarding the taxi, the passengers have to pay 95 cents. Be sure to check the meter before boarding as there are many rigged taxi meters in Hanoi. Motorbike taxis are also very common and cheap mode of transportation in Hanoi.
To travel around the city it is best to hire a car or a motorbike. A car for a day with the driver will cost about USD 33.
Cyclos can be found all over the city and is good for traveling short distance. For traveling very long distance it will cost only about USD 1. It will cost just 2 USD in an hour.

Getting There

Hanoi is well connected by the bus route and buses come here from all sections to the country. The most important bus stations in Hanoi are Kim Ma Bus station, Giap Bat Bus Station, My Dinh Bus station and Gia Lam Bus Station. Hanoi is also connected by buses to all major tourist destinations of Vietnam. Hired cars and motorbikes are also very easy and comfortable ways of traveling in Vietnam. Hanoi has a big train station, where trains from all parts of the country come here. There are trains from Laos and China to Hanoi. International flights come to Hanoi regularly from Hong Kong and Bangkok. The two airlines, which have regular flights to Hanoi, are Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines.

Shopping

There are ample shopping options for visitors in Hanoi. The things in this city are also not very expensive. In the Hang Gai region of Hanoi, people can get some great silk and garments. In the street, close to the Nha Tho, there also some nice shops.

The shops where you can get some of greatest clothes are Song, Khai Silk, Thuy An, F Silk, Thuy An and Co. The tourists can buy ready made garments or materials or clothes. While in Hanoi do not forget to buy some great craft items as souvenirs. The best shops for buying crafts are Craft Link, Craft Window and Lan Vietnamese Handicrafts. There are some good antique shops in Hanoi and many antique materials are also exported from here to various parts of the world.

Nightlife

The city of Hanoi comes to life after sundown. There are plenty of bars, pubs and clubs all around the city where everyone can have a nice time. The exuberant nightlife of Hanoi is one of its major tourist attractions. The beer bars of Hanoi are crowded after sundown and the cost of the beer is also much less than in the western countries. In USD 10, it is possible to buy at least 100 glasses of beer. The best nightlife in the city is in the Old Quarter of the city.
