Katmandu is the capital city of Nepal and it is a popular tourist destination. Adventure tourism has made this city very popular among international tourists. Katmandu is also the doorstep to the majestic Himalayas. UNESCO declared a significant portion of this city as a world heritage site. The notable landmarks in the city of Katmandu are Dharahara, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Kasthamandap, Tharlam Monastery and the very popular Pashupatinath Temple. There are many good hotels in Katmandu and lifestyles in certain areas are very western due to the tourist influx.

Katmandu is a fascinating city with exotic buildings and temples. The city as a whole will amaze you to the core. Some of the major attractions in Katmandu are:
Kings Palace: In Nepal, the king is the head of the state and his palace is located in the capital. The palace is a modern building surrounded by fruit garden having enormous fruit bats.

Swayambhu: It is one of the most popular Buddhist stupas in Nepal. Here you can buy some great Tibetan trinkets. As the stupa is situated on a hill you will have to climb quite of lot of stairs. The view from the top is exquisite but bewares of the numerous monkeys.

Katmandu Durbar square: The Durbar Square is in existence since 1000 AD. There are palaces and temples in this area and due to its exoticness UNESCO has declared it as one of the world heritage sites. Some of the temples and palaces, which adorn the Katmandu Darbar Square, are Taleju Temple, Indrapur Temple, Maju Deval, Ashok Binayak, Bhagwati Temple, Kal Bhairab, Vishnu Temple, Sweta Bhairab, Shiva-Parvati Temple and Krishna Temple.

Getting Around

The best way to travel within the city of Katmandu is on foot. It is the best way to explore and imbibe the city’s unique culture. If walking is not you cup of tea try taking a rickshaw. These are widely found in the tourist areas of the city. Another common way of traveling is by taxis which are usually found all over the city. However, after midnight the fare may go up.

Getting There

It is possible to go to Katmandu by air or by road. There is not train service to this city. The international airport of Nepal is located in Katmandu and is known as Tribhuvan International Airport. There are bus lines operating from India to Katmandu. It is also possible to rent a bike and go to Nepal. There are flights from all over the world to Katmandu. Many hotels and guesthouses offer free pick up from the airport. To come to Katmandu from other parts of Nepal you will have to take a bus or a taxi.

Shopping

Katmandu is a real nice place to shop. The best thing to buy in this city is clothes. Tailors can also be hired at low cost if you prefer custom made clothes. There are many fabric shops in Indra Chowk and Bishal Bazaar. Silver is a best buy in Katmandu and people from other parts of the world comes here. In Katmandu, you can buy rugs and carpets made of silk or wool. A service fee is charged on every purchase with a credit card. Katmandu is a good place to buy cultural artifacts, although it is illegal to export antiques. You can find good pashminas at a very low cost in Nepal. In some shops in Thamel you can find electronic items like camera and other devices.

Nightlife

Nightlife action in Katmandu is concentrated in the Thamel district of the city. The bars and clubs in the city are open till 10 at night mostly. Some new bars and clubs are mushrooming at Patan area. In Katmandu you will also find a casino where you can gamble. Few bars and clubs of Katmandu are listed below:
