Medical care in Nepal is extremely limited and is generally not up to Western standards. Typical complaints can be addressed by the clinics in Katmandu, and some surgeries can also be performed in the capital. However, serious illnesses often require evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility (in Singapore, Bangkok or New Delhi). If you intend to travel around Nepal, illnesses and injuries suffered while hiking in remote areas often require evacuation by helicopter to Katmandu. Those trekking in remote areas of Nepal should factor the high costs of a potential helicopter rescue into their financial considerations. Do procure a travel insurance if you are going to be traveling heavily during your teaching stint. There is minimal mental health care available in Nepal. Medical facilities are often overwhelmed due to insufficient resources and the emergency services available fall far short of those expected in the US or UK.

Unquestionably, the best hospital in Nepal is CIWEC clinic. The hospital has very proficient Nepali and Western staff, although medical fees are also high. Another good clinic is the Nepal International Clinic. A number of private hospitals operate in the valley. One is B&B hospital and is reputed among the expats. Patan Hospital is another hospital worth going to.
