Kolkata is one of the metro cities of India and is well connected by all
parts of India. This city is also the gateway to the north-eastern part of

Kolkata is a vibrant and colorful city with various attractions in and around
the city. Kolkata is the cultural capital of India and is one of the most
historic cities of this nation. The remnants of the British Raj in India are
very well reflected in the architectures of Kolkata. Some of the places which
should be visited while in this ‘City of Joy’ are:
Victoria Memorial: Victoria Memorial is a beautiful monument made by the
British in the colonial times. It is a replica of Taj Mahal and has exquisite
looks.
National Museum: The National Museum of India is located in Kolkata. It
was great collections of historic objects from the pre-historic times.
The ghats of River Ganges: the ghats of river Ganges are some of the most
exciting places to hang out. The view of the gallant Howrah Bridge after sundown
from the ghats is awesome.
College Street: You will be astonished at the sheer size and enormity of
the book market in College Street. It is the biggest second hand book market in
the world and you will be dazed in the maze of books.
Shantiniketan: Shantiniketan is just 5 hours distance from Kolkata. This
place is closely associated with Rabindranath Tagore, the first Nobel Laureate
of India. Apart from the historical and cultural significance of this place, one
will be amazed at the natural beauty that this place has to offer.
There are many places to visit in and around Kolkata apart from the above
mentioned places. If you are fond of sea and beaches you can go to Digha or Puri
near this city. The beautiful tea gardens of Darjeeling are also quite near
Kolkata and while here do plan a trip to the North East region of India.

There are all sorts of accommodations in Kolkata. You can find some great
apartments at moderate rents in this city. There are few good five star
hotels, three star hotels and also budget hotels in Kolkata. There are many

There are numerous eating options scattered all
over Kolkata. In this city you will find restaurants catering to various types
of cuisine. Chinese food is very common in Kolkata, and there is a big Chinese
settlement here. Good continental food is a big costly in some of the
restaurants. There are some good bars and pubs in the Park Street area of the
city. A good meal in an average restaurant can cost about USD 10. People of
Kolkata love to eat out and restaurants are not the only options. There are
road side eateries all over the city selling all kinds of fast food. While in
Kolkata, you should taste rolls at various stalls, the sumptuous sweets and
the authentic Bengali cuisine. There are many restaurants in this city like ‘
Bhojohori Manna’ and ‘Tero Parban’ where you can have great Bengali dishes. It
is not very unsafe to eat out in Kolkata; however, you should avoid having
water from outside. Food in Kolkata is really cheap as an average lunch would
cost about a 2 USD maximum.
Getting Around
There are various modes of transportation in Kolkata and it is really
inexpensive. There are buses, both public and private, auto-rickshaws, taxis,
trams, metro and trains. You can also find occasional shuttle cars for
transportation. The fare of the taxis are more than all the above mentioned
transportation options, but these are very comfortable. Metro rail is another
inexpensive but comfortable way of traveling in Kolkata. For the time being
there is only one line thus it connects very less parts of the city. Trams in
Kolkata can be seen in some of the selected places. Private and public buses are
very common way of traveling in the city. Traffic can be very hectic here and
try avoiding the rush hours in the morning and evening. There are constant
rallies, meetings, and road blocks in Kolkata, which also affect the normal
traffic flow significantly.

Flights from all over India and the world come to Netaji Subhash Airport in
Kolkata. The two major railway stations of Kolkata are Sealdah and Howrah.
Trains from all parts of the country come to these two stations. Kolkata also
has the biggest port of India. Thus, it is also possible to enter the city via
water route. As Kolkata is connected by good highways, there are also buses and
cars, which come to this city from far away.
Shopping
Kolkata is a good and cheap place to shop. You will find all kinds of good here
at an affordable rate. In recent years, many new shopping malls have been
established in this city, which are very westernized. In almost all the big
shops you can use a Visa or a MasterCard. The biggest market in Kolkata is the
New Market and the new mall, which has come up here is the South City Mall. Some
of the souvenirs, to be taken from Kolkata are sweets, silk, tribal arts and
gold jewelry. In Kolkata, you will find some items in a cheaper rate than the
other Indian cities.
Nightlife
Nightlife in Kolkata is not very exciting and exuberant as the western cities or
Mumbai and Delhi. But it is certainly a safe place to be after sundown. There
are many discos, bars and pubs in the Park Street region of Kolkata. There are
not curfews at night in this city unlike other big cities of India. Thus the
parties go on till dawn, especially on the weekends. There are cultural programs
in the city, mainly during the winter months, which you can go to watch if you
have keen interest in Indian culture. Try to be in Kolkata during the Durga Puja,
which is the most exciting time in the city.
