Cochin is an extremely beautiful city located on the shores of the Arabian
Sea. It is close to the famous backwaters of Kerala. This area has been

Cochin is very truly the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’. Some of the places, which
have to be visited while in this city, are:
Jewish Synagogue: this 16th century synagogue has some of the rarest of
historic artifacts like, the Great Scrolls of the Old Testament, the copper
plate grant of the rulers of Cochin. It is also one of the most ancient
synagogues in the world. In the Jew town of Cochin you can still find the usage
of Hebrew.
Willington Island: this island is a big island, which is entirely man
made. There are are some of the biggest hotels of Kerala located in this island.
Saint Francis Church: this church is the most ancient church in India,
which was established by the Portuguese. It is where the world famous explorer
Vasco da Gama was buried in this very place. Even here you will find some of the
greatest historical manuscripts and most famous of them is the ‘Doop Book’,
which is a Dutch Baptismal Register.
Dutch Palace: the other name of this palace is Mattancherry palace. It
was made by Veera Kerala Varma, the Indian ruler of Cochin in the year 1555 and
later taken over and renovated by the Dutch. The belongings of the royal
families and the portraits of the rajas of Cochin can be found here.
Chinese Fishing Nets: these are the most unique of attractions of Cochin.
These nets can only be found in this part of the world. These enormous nets have
almost become synonymous with this city of India.

Cochin is a city where you can taste some of most
tasty South Indian cuisine. There are fast food centers all around the city
which mostly sell South Indian snacks. Due to high European influence on this
city you can find some good bakeries in Cochin selling great cakes, pasties
and pies. There are also few good restaurants selling international food in
this city. Cochin is a very modern city and you can find burger shops, cafes
and pizzerias mostly visited by the younger generation.
Getting Around
Auto-rickshaws, tourist cabs, public and private buses, ferries and trains are
the various modes of transportation in Cochin. There are many islands in Cochin
which are connected by regular ferries. Auto-rickshaws are the most common and
comfortable mode of transport in this city. Tourist’s cabs cam be hired for a
day or two for the tours. These are not very expensive and are very easily
available.
Getting There
Cochin or Kochi has its own international airport in close proximity to the
city. There are flights from various Middle Eastern countries and South East
Asian countries to this city. The Trivandrum International Airport is also close
to Kochi. There are also flights to the Cochin International Airport from other
big cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. The two main railway
stations of Cochin are Ernakulam Town and Ernakulam Junction. Trains from all
across India come to Cochin as it is one of the most important tourist and
commercial centers of South India. The route of Konkan Railway ie, from Mumbai
to Cochin is well known for its incredible natural beauty. Cochin is also
connected to various parts of South India by long distance bus routes. Cochin is
one of the most important ports of India and it is also possible to take the
water route to this city from Goa or Mumbai.
Shopping
Cochin is located in the land of spices and the most important of all is the
black pepper which is produced here in abundance. While in Cochin it is best to
shop in the local markets for buying indigenous products. The Jew Town in Cochin
has a wide array of antique and craft shops. The key to shopping in these shops
is to bargain hard so that you can procure the right price. Few new shopping
malls are coming up in this city in recent years but it is still a new concept.
South Indian silks are really famous so you can buy some silk textiles if
possible.
Nightlife
Nightlife in Cochin can be very varied. If you are
staying in a good hotel or a resort you will mostly have two choices. You can
have a leisurely evening by the bay sipping on cocktails or go party in the
clubs and discos in the hotels. If you are interested in Indian culture you
can also go and watch Kathakali Performances and Kalaripayattu performances.
Cochin in recent years has become a commercial hub of Kerala and this has led
to the influx of young people from other parts of the country to this city.
